Spring 2020 Bud Break Update
In antiquity, and in the millenia since, wine has been imbued by humankind with sacred qualities.  Beyond red wine’s visual similarity to our blood, the idea of wine having a divine quality is probably owed to the vine, a plant that by all appearance dies in autumn only to be reborn at the end of winter.  The fact that the fruit of the vine, in the form of wine, survives the vine’s autumnal demise to provide us with hedonistic pleasure is perhaps the only example of paradise we are likely to encounter in our mortal lives.

“Bud break” is what kicks off this divine cycle.  Bud break is when small, green buds that are fuzzy in appearance first appear on the vines.  It is a sign that the vines are emerging from their dormant state, and the new vintage is underway in the vineyard.

This year, we experienced a couple weeks of warmer-than-normal temperatures and bright sunshine in early February, and that has brought upon a slightly earlier-than-normal bud break.  The risk that is present every year, and slightly more so when bud break is early, is of the dreaded March frosts that can visit vineyards in pre-dawn hours.  A sustained frost after bud break can decimate a vineyard by killing the buds before they can flower and turn into grapes.

With the recent cold weather, there has been on onslaught of wind machines around wine country each night. Although we won't know the impact of these cold nights until the fruit has set, we can anticipate that several vineyards may experience a lower than normal yield. Although this smaller yield may present challenges for the grower, a smaller yield typically leads to lighter clusters and more intense fruit resulting in higher quality wines. We are optimistic that the 2020 growing season is starting off to a good start so far!

New Release Wines
VIE Winery is proud to announce its Spring 2020 New Release Wines!

2016 L'Imaginaire Grenache

The 2016 L’Imaginaire is a knockout version with 96% grenache and 4% syrah. It shows bright red cherry notes on the nose, giving way to an intoxicating palate of black fruit flavors, beef au jus, black pepper spice and an alluring, soft mouthfeel. This is one of those wines where the natural acidity is so thirst-slaking that the bottle will be gone before you know it, so enjoy this wine before it's gone!

2016 Syrah, Petris Vineyard, Bien Nacido Clone

The 2016 Bien Nacido Clone Syrah from the Petris Vineyard shows aromas of red and blue fruits and Provencal herbs, and a palate of cherry red fruit, pepper and other capsicum spices, with mineral notes on an earthy finish, all accompanied by bright acidity. This cool climate Syrah is a perfect example of a Syrah from the famed Los Carneros regions.

2016 Syrah, Petris Vineyard, Durell Clone

In 2016, the first non-drought year in California since 2011, saw ideal growing conditions which look even better in retrospect because we did not have the dramatic winds and wildfire to contend with as we have each year since 2016. It has aromas of violet and red and black fruit, and is medium-to-full bodied on the palate with earth and leather notes matched with rich, dark berry notes.

2015 Roussanne

90 points Wine Enthusiast
Roussanne boasts great structure and full palate weight. The wine delivers up front with honeysuckle and apricot notes with a clean crisp entry on the font of the palate. The mineral notes under luscious round full-mouth caramelizing fruit and balanced acidity allow this wine to be enjoyed with or without food. Drink now and within the next 3-4 years.

90 points Wine Enthusiast
The this blend of 60% Zinfandel, 35% Syrah (including the Las Madres Vineyard) and 5% Petite Syrah combines the spicy peppery flavors and up-front brambleberry and red cherry, with green pepper corn and cassis, and full mid-palate bringing elegant and dark cherry fruit in the finish, with hints of coffee and toffee in a surprising long finish for a Zinfandel based wine. Enjoy over a barbecue or red meat over the next 3-5 years.
